Have you heard about the World Beer Cup? It's like the Olympics of beer. This beer competition is considered the most prestigious in the world. It takes place every year alongside the Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America. It's a gathering of beer enthusiasts, experts, and brewers from all over. They come together to celebrate and recognize the best of the best in the brewing industry.
Three beers made in Michigan were awarded at this year's World Beer Cup among 10,213 entries from 2,376 breweries and 51 countries.
Which Michigan Beers Scored An Award?
At the Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America in Nashville earlier this month, Redwood Brewing Co. in Flint, Founders Brewing in Grand Rapids, and The Mitten Brewing Co. in West Michigan won medals from the award ceremony.
Redwood Brewing Co. claimed the gold medal in the Belgian Style Tripel category with their Nectar of the Gods beer. Founders Brewing took home the silver medal in the Old Ale or Strong Ale category for their Dirty Bastard brew. The Mitten Brewing Co. secured the bronze medal in the Field Beer category with their creation, Imperial Peanuts & Crackerjacks. These Michigan-made beers stood out among an average of 99 entries per category, making their wins even more noteworthy.
Award Methodology
In the World Beer Cup, brewing excellence is acknowledged across 111 categories. However, it's important to note that the top three entries in each category aren't automatically awarded. Instead, the judges carefully evaluate and assess the entries to identify examples of each style. Only when a category has three outstanding beers is when they award it gold, silver, and bronze awards for first, second, and third place.
"Evaluating beer happens on many levels," says World Beer Cup competition director Chris Williams. "On a professional level, beer evaluation is a form of peer review. The results are public, so consumers can learn what beers meet a high level of quality and what beers exemplify certain styles as interpreted by the judges."
The competition is organized by the Brewers Association, the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers, their beers, and the community of brewing enthusiasts.
